Director Michael Bay’s latest action movie Pain & Gain topped the weekend box office, taking in US$20 million in its debut.

The movie stars Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Mark Wahlberg as bodybuilders who turn to kidnapping and extortion. Only in Hollywood? Nope – the film is based on a true story.

Meanwhile, Tom Cruise’s post-apocalyptic thriller Oblivion made $17 million in its second week in theatres, according to movie-tracking website BoxOfficeMojo.com.

Baseball movie 42 – it follows Jackie Robinson as he becomes the first black player in the Major Leagues – took in $10 million.

Overseas, fans flocked to see the latest from Robert Downey Jr. and co. Iron Man 3 made $195.3 million in its opening weekend – that’s ahead of The Avengers, last year’s highest-grossing movie. That film made $185 million in its opening weekend.

Iron Man 3 opens in Canada on Friday.
