The Avengers has hit the billion-dollar mark at the international box office.
The latest superhero movie from Marvel – it follows Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Captain America, Thor and The Hulk – made US $103 million this weekend in the United States alone.
Since its release, The Avengers has earned US$373.2 million domestically and $628.9 million worldwide — for a haul of just over $1 billion.
The movie has only been in theatres for 19 days.
Earlier this week, Walt Disney reported better-than-expected quarterly earnings, helped in part by the success of The Avengers.
Disney CEO Robert Iger said a sequel is already in development, and so are sequels to Captain America and Thor. The third installment of Iron Man is also in the works.
The movie has an all-star cast, including Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Canadian Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill.
